New England Suzuki Institute Class Descriptions

Master Classes (all levels)
These lessons are a shared experience. Three or four children, depending on their book level, are assigned to a teacher for an hour, and each receives private instruction for a portion of that hour while the others observe. Parents attend and take notes to manage the child's practice time efficiently. Two students per hour share Teen master classes.

Repertoire Classes (all levels)
These are also organized by book level. In a group repertoire class, musical techniques and playing skills can be worked on as the students play their common repertoire together. The emphasis is on the polishing of review pieces and not on the learning of new repertoire.

Orff Class (Budding Artists)
A fun class based upon a music education program founded by German composer Carl Orff (1895-1993) who was concerned with developing the musicality of each child through movement, singing, playing and improvisation. Nancy Cash-Cobb, instructor

To Infinity and Beyond with Song! (Budding Artists)
Does your child like to sing? How about going on an imaginary adventure and singing? On one of our adventures we'll go to outer space. We'll sing "The Planets" song (with model planets), "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon" from Sesame Street, "Fly Me to the Moon" etc. On another adventure, we'll go out to sea and sing "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean," (great movement song) then maybe we take on some water in our boat and decide to bail it out, only there's a problem: "There's a Hole in the Bucket." And who could go to sea without singing "A Sailor went to Sea, Sea, Sea." Lots of fun, lots of singing and a whole lot of imagination!
Laura Harris, instructor

Sightsinging (Young Artists)
A class in which you are the instrument! Learn to recognize intervals and sing them, read rhythms, hear written music 'in your head' and train your ears to help with your music making no matter what instrument you play. The most popular part of the class is a game called "Stump You" where the students attempt to recognize melodies in silence with only the use of hand signals. The instructor tries to stump the students but he seldom wins the game!
Tony Antolini, Instructor

Musical History 'Mystery' Tours (Young Artists and Teens)
Using opera and orchestral masterpieces, take a journey through history and experience music by the great composers. Gain a glimpse into the life, personality, and the time during which each of these composers lived. You will be exposed to the fundamentals of music appreciation as you learn both the vocabulary and substance of this incredible music. By acting out and portraying these stories using costumes, multimedia, and audience participation, Musical History 'Mystery' Tours brings the masterpieces to life in a way that is not only fun for children but also memorable and inspiring.
Chuck Speicher, Instructor

Fiddle Class (violins and cellos)
Students learn the repertoire and techniques of fiddle playing and perform at Thursday night's contradance. The songs for both violin and cello can be downloaded from the website by February 1, 2012. Please download and print your song sheets before coming to NESI. If you need to be provided with a printed book, contact the director before coming to NESI. Book 2 level and above; basic reading skills are helpful.
Kaity Newell, Instructor

Blues/Improv Class (Young Artists of all instruments with reading skills and ability to play scales in various keys)
Learn to play blues style and improvise as you go. The instructor will be chosen from our available faculty.

Chamber Ensemble (Young Artist)
Students experience the essence of music by participating in ensembles, one or two to a part. Playing chamber music helps to find one's individual musical voice. In order to have the best possible experience, students will receive music mailed to them prior to the start of NESI to be learned ahead of time. A solid technique and a strong reading ability are recommended for chamber music students. Previous ensemble experience is helpful. Open to students of all instruments, book 4 and above, with appropriate reading skills. Placement into chamber ensemble based on video audition to be received no later than May 1. Please send a 5 minute excerpt of your polished piece. Accompaniment is not necessary.
