Each student should review all repertoire up to and including his/her current piece and come prepared to play a polished piece for the first class meeting. Memorization of all Suzuki and solo repertoire is expected. The teacher can readily assess a student's needs by hearing a piece that is technically and musically well prepared.
All children, ages 12 and under, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the New England Suzuki Institute. All students staying in Colby College housing must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The masterclass is one of the most valuable classes in the student’s experience at NESI. The students will be in a group of 2-4 students, depending on level, and will meet with a teacher for an hour each day. The student will receive an assignment each day to practice before returning to the masterclass the next day.
Students are placed in small ensembles in which each student will have their own part. They will receive their music in mid May by email and are expected to learn their part, working with their home teacher prior to arriving to NESI. Chamber groups, which can include any number of combinations of instruments, rehearse daily with a chamber coach, and perform at the end of the week. Chamber music is a fun way for students to play together, being a leader of their own part. It is a popular part of the program for students Book 4 and above.
Siblings are welcome to come to the NESI. They are welcome and encouraged to participate in enrichment classes for an additional fee. Siblings that are not enrolled in NESI should be quiet and respectful. Parents should take care to supervise siblings and not let them disrupt the classes.
When registering your child for NESI, there is a place to make requests for housing. A request may include preference to stay close-by to other families or to stay on a particular floor. When creating the room assignments, we are careful to try to accommodate all requests, but can not guarantee, based on availability.
In the event that you decide to cancel your registration, please email us. Tuition is refundable, minus the $125 non-refundable deposit per student, if we are notified in writing before June 1st. Applicants who withdraw after June 1st will forfeit all fees.
