Teacher Training
NESI is excited to welcome Edmund Sprunger to teach Unit 1 for violin and viola this summer.
Dates are June 27, 2026 – July 4, 2026
Instruction begins at 10am on June 27th and ends at 12pm on July 4th.
The Unit 1 Course provides a foundational introduction to the Suzuki teaching philosophy and the pedagogy for Pre-Twinklers through Book 1 for violin and/or viola. The program includes:
28 hours of in-class instruction
15 hours of required observation of lessons
Participants will engage in a comprehensive study of topics such as:
The rationale behind the Suzuki philosophy
The role of parent and caregiver involvement in a Suzuki studio
Listening and home practice strategies
Development of pre-reading and reading skills
Tone production and posture
Structure of group classes, in addition to individual private instruction
Building a nurturing studio community
Managing the business and organizational aspects of teaching
The course is conducted in person at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Prerequisites: Participants must have completed an introductory course, such as "Every Child Can!" (ECC) or an equivalent program. Active membership in the regional Suzuki association is encouraged. It is strongly recommended that participants memorize the pieces in the Suzuki Violin/Viola Book 1 repertoire before the start of the course and purchase or download reference recordings of these pieces. Please note that 100% attendance is required for registration in any SAA courses.
Participants should be prepared to play their instrument during this course.
